Alleged Tanya Maniktala kiss on temple premises

A big controversy erupted when Tanya Maniktala (Lata Mehra) was shown kissing another actor, Danesh Razvi (Kabir Durrani), inside the temple premises in Netflix’s web series A Suitable Boy. There were a total of 3 kissing scenes taking place inside a temple. Fans and critics both went furious at these kissing scenes while enquiring about things like, “If the Muslim man and Hindu woman are in love inside the web series’ story, then why are all the kissing scenes happening inside temples and not mosques?”

It was alleged that the Tanya Maniktala web series has hurt the sentiments of Hindus by shooting a kissing scene inside temple premises. The hashtag “Boycott Netflix” started trending on X (formerly known as Twitter) instantly as fans and netizens became furious.

BJP leader Gaurav Tiwari even filed an FIR against the filmmakers in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, saying his objection was not to the kissing scene but to the fact that it was shot inside the temple while Aarti took place in the background. He further asked, “Can you shoot such scenes during Azaan at a mosque?” Gaurav further stated that such filmmakers are assuming Hindus’ tolerance is weak, and it is an insult to the crores of Lord Shiva devotees. He asked the filmmakers to apologise for such an act.

Gaurav Tiwari (BJP leader) also criticised Netflix for promoting such anti-Hindu activities on religious sites. He then said that he is uninstalling Netflix from his phone and asked the others to do the same.

The controversy did not stop there; Madhya Pradesh Home Minister at the time, Dr Narottam Mishra, also wanted the allegations against these filmmakers to be examined, and he instructed the police officials to do the same and to verify if Netflix had hurt religious sentiments in this case by shooting an intimate kissing scene inside a Hindu temple.

After verifying that the series has indeed hurt religious sentiments, the police and the govt acted based on an already filed complaint by Gaurav Tiwari (BJP leader) and registered an FIR on 23 November 2020 at Rewa Police Station against Netflix India executives Monika Shergill (Vice President, Content) and Ambika Khurana (Director, Public Policies). For outraging religious sentiments, this FIR was filed under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The police investigations found that the controversial kissing scene was not filmed directly inside the temple but somewhere else on the large fort complex (near the Narmada River). With that development, all legal troubles against the filmmakers eventually died down. However, by this point, people on the internet found even more Hinduphobic instances inside the web series and the past actions of the filmmakers. Critics and viewers criticised the problematic Hinduphobic themes inside A Suitable Boy. Inside the series, Hindus can be shown repeatedly walking around the Hindu idols and holy trees in shoes and sandals, almost as if they are trying to mock and insult Hindus.
