Ugadi meaning: What is Ugadi?

This festival has many names in different states. For example, it is known as Samvatsaradi (Kannada New Year) and Yugadi (Telugu New Year). Samvatsarādi also means the beginning of the year.

  • Ugadi comes from the cycle of 60 years, where each year is named individually. Each of these years’ first day is known as “Ugadi”.
  • The word “Ugadi” itself is made up of two words, “Uga” and “Adi”. “Uga” means course of stars and “Adi” means starting.
  • Ugadi is celebrated on the first day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar’s Chaitra month. In the Gregorian calendar, it generally comes at the end of March or the start of April. In Tamil months, it comes on the day of Amavasya with the 27th Nakshatra Revati in either Panguni or Chithrai month.

  • The Chandramana Calendar: The Sun’s position and the Phases of the Moon are together used in the Chandramana calendar to measure time. Every month of this calendar begins with the new moon. The stars closest to the full moon define the name of every respective month.

  • The Souramana Calendar: This calendar uses the sun and its background stars to measure the time. Twelve 30-degree partitions are made from the sun’s 360-degree path. Each of these partitions is then named a month. The names of these months come from their respective constellations.
    • Souramana Ugadi is also known as Vaisakhi or Baisakhi. The sun enters the Aries constellation (Mesha) on this day and marks the celebration of Mesha Sankranti. It is also known as Vishu in the South India.

Ugadi 2024 Date: When is Ugadi in 2024?

This year, Ugadi will be celebrated on Tuesday, 9 April 2024. Ugadi will be celebrated on Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra month. Pratipada Tithi begins at 11:50 PM on 8 April 2024 and ends at 08:30 PM on 9 April 2024. With this, Telugu Shaka Samvat 1946 Begins.

How is the Ugadi Festival celebrated?

On this day, colourful Rangoli/Muggulu patterns are drawn in the homes. Along with that, mango leaf decorations called torana are also decorated on the house’s doors. Gifts are bought and given among friends and family on this day. It is also believed that this is the day to do charity for needy people.

Ugadi festival’s preparations begin weeks before the big day. Houses are cleaned properly days ahead of the day. New clothes like Dhoti and Kurta are bought on this day.

Taking Special baths, oil massages and preparing a food dish called Pachadi is also part of this festival. All flavours are combined in the festive food of Pachadi – sweet, bitter, astringent, sour, salty, and piquant. This dish is a symbolic reminder on this day to let everyone know that you are expected to experience all flavours in the new year’s journey. Since it is a Hindu festival, many Hindus also visit Hindu temples on this day to pray for their well-being and peace.
